What kind of paper should I use for writing calligraphy?

Filed under: Sheaffer Fountain Pen — admin @ 4:26 pm

I'm just getting into calligraphy and want to write something for a special occasion. What kind of paper should I use? Any brands of parchment or anything in particular? Also, I'm using an old Sheaffer Calligraphy Pen that came in a kit. Any suggestions for a new fountain pen or calligraphy pen or something? Any brands in particular? I don't want to spend too much money on it though (no more than $50 for a pen for me). Thanks.

You do not need s special brand pen. What you need to make sure is that the ink is not going to smudge or smear. Higgins is a good ink but there are other. There is also colored ink for caligraphy pens. Parchemnt paper is all you need no particular brand so long as you dont buy it at a dollar store.

  2. Borden and Riley make a paper called Paper for Pens that is great.

I highly recommend you order a (free) catalog from Paper and Ink Arts, they’ve been selling calligraphy supplies for years and years.

You’ll get good ideas about supplies just looking at the catalog.

You might want want to join a group called Cyberscribes, its a Yahoo group all about everything to do with calligraphy.

Lots of people from beginner to expert who are happy to answer questions. All ages as well, from teens on up to ancient.

(disclosure – I’ve been a moderator of the Cyberscribes group for about ten years and have bought supplies from Paper and Ink for close to 20 years now)

  3. If you are making something that you want to ‘last’…most inks from Shaeffer pen sets are not light-fast…work will fade. Calli ink works in fountain pens nicely…is acrylic, and may last longer. Using fountain pen narrows your choices of inks.

Hot Press watercolor paper is lovely— get a big sheet that you can cut to size for finished piece…for $3-4. It has a smooth finish.
